PRODUCT OF WADI DO'AN, HADRAMAUT YEMEN

PRODUCT OF WADI DO'AN, HADRAMAUT YEMEN
                                                   PURE YEMENI HONEY
                                           AUTHENTIC, ORGANIC & RAW

In Yemen, the method of beekeeping has always been a traditional one. No chemicals or drugs are allowed (in modern agriculture, chemicals and antibiotics are widely used to control mites and other bee diseases in the hives). No machinery is used. To extract the honey they use smoke (from dried camel skins) that forces the bees to come out and move away. Then they take off the cover and the comb is extracted with a knife. It is put into boxes or larger containers by hand.

The honey is then poured, unheated and raw, into containers, thus preserving its vital live enzymatic constituents.

Pure Yemeni honey comes from trees which grow uncultivated in the desert area of Yemen. Sidr tree is a sturdy and deep-rooted tree which has withstood the devastating floods of Eram at Ma'arib Yemen with two other trees: the Tamarisk and the Mustard Tree. Sidr belongs to the "Ziziphus" family of plants. The average tree size normally between 7-8 meters height. Branches are soft with grey-yellow color. Flowers of the plant are yellow and it has round and yellowish fruits which turn to reddish color when mature.

To appreciate this highly revered honey, one has to understand the story behind its tree. The Sidr tree, (also known as Lote tree, Christ's Thorn, Jujube or Nabkh tree. Botanical name: Ziziphus spina-christi) is an ancient tree. It is believed that the Jujube fruit was the first thing Adam ate when he was made to descend to earth. The tree was used during the time of King Solomon and the Pharaohs to build palaces and place of worship.

All of its parts have medicinal values. Its leaves are used as a herbal shampoo, to treat dandruff, head lice, swollen eyes, abscesses, furuncles and counter obesity. Mixed with warm water the leaves are used to clean the body since they are a disinfectant and the oil from the resin is deodorant. Its wood ash is used for the treatment of snakebites. Its fruits are found to have a very high energy value. Its seeds are rich in protein; its leaves rich in calcium, iron and magnesium. The root, stem bark are also used in various medicinal preparations. Other known medicinal uses include as a stomachic, an appetizer, an astringent and also as a cough medicine.

BENEFITS OF HONEY

Honey isn't Just Sugar!

The fact is, honey is far better than what most people perceive. Researchers are turning up more and more new evidence of honey's medical benefits in all directions. The benefits of honey don't just stop at satisfying the palate; honey also offers incredible antiseptic, antioxidant and cleansing properties for our body and health, hot beauty and skin care tips for ladies, and amazing healing properties as a head-to-toe remedy, from eye conjunctivitis to athlete foot. Its powerful healing attributes have long been used thousands of years ago and known to promote healing for cuts, cure ailments and diseases, and correct health disorders for generations after generations. This honey not only fights infection and aids tissue healing but also helps reduce inflammation and scarring. In addition, it is often used for treating digestive problems such as diarrhea, indigestion, stomach ulcers and gastroenteritis.  With more and more health experts and theories, such as the Hibernation Diet, supporting its benefits, this oldest natural sweetener just keeps getting better.

Every drop of honey holds the spark of life. Our forefathers had understood honey's remarkable healing gift and had used it successfully in curing most diseases. Sidr honey has been reported to be good for liver problems, stomach ulcers, respiratory infections, diseases resulting from malnutrition, digestive problems, constipation, eye diseases, infected wounds and burns, surgical wounds (incl. caesarian), promote speedy recovery after childbirth, facilitates menstruation, (with various herbs) it can be used against epilepsy, strengthened the immune systems, to promote general health and vitality.

Natural Aphrodisiac - Mixing Sidr honey with carrot seeds makes it an aphrodisiac. A blend of the honey with certain combination of nuts, ginseng and herbs are claimed to be better than Viagra, with no side effects.

Antioxidant - Some honeys are found to have as much as 75-150 mg ascorbic acid per 100g, while others have less than 5mg per 100g. Antioxidants are important in counteracting the damage caused to the body by free radicals  which play a role in the aging process and in triggering diseases such as arterial disease and cancer. Research has found that darker honeys have higher antioxidant properties.

Antibacterial - Medical science is rediscovering the effectiveness of honey in the use of alternative therapies in areas where the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (the"super-bugs") spreads. Honeys may differ in the potency of its antibacterial activity thus affecting its healing abilities. Some honeys are no more antibacterial than sugar, while others can be diluted more than 100-fold and still halt the growth of bacteria.

The Hibernation Diet: lose weight while you sleep

The recent revolutionary Hibernation Diet created by a British pharmacist and a nutrition expert by making a powerful connection between poor sleep and obesity. It advocates incorporating mild resistance exercise and a healthy, balanced, and wholesome diet void of highly refined, processed foods such as white bread, pizza, burgers, chocolates, beer and sugar and suggest  taking a generous spoonful or two of honey at night, either as a warm drink, a smoothie or straight from the jar.

You'll wake up feeling refreshed and your whole body will benefit. Your skin will improve its tone and texture. Your hair, nails, internal organs and mood will all reap the benefits. The hibernation diet is about recruiting your own natural recovery system for weight control.

Your brain demands constant energy but cannot store any. The energy your brain uses comes first off, from your liver. However, the liver can only store a small amount of energy at a time - about 75 grams.

During the night, your body needs new energy to build new cells for your bones, skin, muscles and all your vital functions. Your recovery gland (known as the pituitary, master of the recovery hormone production) that sends out the message, while you're asleep, to do all this reconditioning.

Working through your liver, your body spends at least 4 hours a night doing all this calorie demanding maintenance work, and these calories come from your fat storage. The first 4 hours of sleep, called slow wave sleep, is when your overnight repair system are their busiest.

During sleep, our body uses fat for energy during rest and recovery. For this to occur, our liver must be adequately stocked with fuel reserves to get through the 8 hour fast.

When our liver is fueled, our blood sugar is stable and our body can use fat stores almost exclusively for energy. One of the best ways to fuel our liver is to eat 1 or 2 tablespoons of honey within an hour of bedtime.

Honey has the same amounts of glucose and fructose.Your liver takes in the fructose. The fructose regulates glucose into the liver. That keeps your blood sugar level balanced all night. With no sudden highs or lows, your liver has storage to keep your brain fueled. Now your recovery hormones get on with their job and they use up your fat storage to do it.

So some principles of this new lifestyle are: going to bed with enough fuel in your liver to feed your brain, using honey as the fueling mechanism at night and exploiting your own body's capacity to burn up fat reserves.

Natural honey when taken prior to bed is believed to be able to fuel the liver, speed up fat-burning metabolism, ease stress hormones and help us get a better night's sleep. This oldest natural sweetener also contains a wide variety of vitamins, including vitamins B6, B1, B2 and B5, and minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, sodium and zinc, anti-oxidants and amino acids, the building blocks of proteins.

This is what I learn about the Hibernation Diet: due to its 1:1 ratio of fructose to glucose, honey is the most ideal food that can provide a fueling mechanism for the body at night, keeping blood sugar levels balanced and letting your recovery hormones get on with burning fat stores. This proposition that honey reduces blood glucose level was published in the Journal of Medicinal Food in April 2004. However, to most people, eating before bedtime, in this case eating sugars seems to defy common sense. Moreover, eating late at night is often discouraged by many people who believe that during bedtime, metabolic rate is low and the body cannot burn calories and would easily put on weight. Being a honey enthusiast, I naturally wanted to know more about how the hibernation diet works scientifically for the good of the body.

Fructose also triggers the glucose enzyme in the liver allowing the liver to take in as much glucose as it requires. This has been referred to as the Fructose Paradox. In other words, fructose lowers the Glycemic Index of glucose; fructose enters the liver and opens the gate for glucose entry preventing a rapid rise in blood glucose. This natural blood glucose regulator found in fruits, vegetables and honey, regulate blood glucose levels and stabilize blood glucose to maintain a regular supply of glucose to the brain.

First of all, are you a candidate for the Hibernation Diet? Ask yourself these questions ...

- Do you wake regularly during the night?
- Do you have night sweats?
- Do you experience acid reflux during the night?
- Do you get up to go to the bathroom during the night?
- Do you feel nauseous in the early morning?
- Do you wake up exhausted?
- Do you have a dry throat in the morning?
- Do you get night cramps?
- Do you feel weak in the early morning?

If "yes" is the answer for any of these questions, it could mean that instead of burning fat and repairing muscles, your body has produced a stream of stress hormones while you've slept.

The hibernation diet also goes on to explain how fructose in honey fuels the brain which is the most energy demanding organ, burning up to 20 times the fuel of any other cell in the body. We become exhausted after having to concentrate for a lengthy period. That's why we often hear that mental exhaustion is worse than physical exhaustion. The brain needs glucose to survive, however glucose occupies a large amount of storage space and there is no room in the brain. And the liver is the only organ that can both store and release glucose into the circulation. This is why looking after your liver glycogen amount by ensuring that the liver and the brain are well provided for both in the day and at night is so critical. Any fall in blood glucose is detrimental for the brain. The adrenal glands to be activated and the adrenal hormones if overproduced can lead to conditions such as heart disease, osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes, poor immune function, depression and other distressing health problems.

What I find inspiring to read is that we burn an amazing 70% fat during rest, 35% during low level exercise, 20% during moderate exercise, and a low 10% during intense exercise. During sleep we should burn fats. However, if the liver is not fueled prior to bed, we release stress hormones from the adrenal glands which raise our heart rate and blood pressure. These hormones instead of burning fat, degrade muscle and bone. The liver must deliver 10 grams of glucose every hour -- 6.5 to the brain, 3.5 to the kidneys and red blood cells. As the liver capacity is only 75 grams, most people go to bed with a depleted liver, activating the adrenal glands and do not recover. And if you do not recover you do not burn fats. The hibernation diet essentially aims to encourage people to reap the benefit of your body's own natural recovery system and optimize their recovery biology or fat burning biology, as explicitly termed by the author who believed that this diet is not only to a healthy weight but unlocking energy resources you never know you had.

Honey for the Children (source: Dr. Muhammed Salim Khan)

Honey being a natural, pre-digested food when given is immediately assimilated into children's blood stream, providing a host of vitamins, minerals and energy. The beauty of honey is that it is natural, safe, delicious to use and available all the year round.

General Weakness in Children - Honey as Children's Tonic

As a practicing physician for the last fifteen years, the most common conditions I get consulted for by parents is general weakness, lack of appetite and anemia. Usually the parents have tried all sorts of vitamins and tonics from their doctors without any real lasting improvement. One teaspoon of honey diluted in water two or three times before or after meals works wonders, improving appetite, weight, complexion and energy. Some children prefer to use one teaspoonful of pure honey mixed in warm milk at night. Anemic children respond well to honey in milk within a few weeks. For school children honey helps to improve their mental alertness and school performance. For this purpose honey can be used instead of jam on toast at breakfast time by children.

Bed-Wetting-
Bed-wetting is a very common condition in many young children. Families and parents can experience anxiety and frustration due to this and it can also undermine a child's self-confidence. Many parents receive the advice from their doctors that the child will grow out of this situation. No doubt most children do grow out of this, however one or two teaspoons of honey before going to bed helps to clear bed-wetting. No liquids should be given to children a few hours before a child's bed time.

Constipation- Constipation is a very common problem in infants and children, particularly those who have not been breast fed. Honey is a mild and gentle laxative which helps to prevent and get rid of constipation.

Coughs and Colds- Children can catch cold very quickly. In winter, colds and coughs are very common and if not treated properly can lead to serious lung diseases. In England asthma is an increasing epidemic, particularly amongst school children.

For these conditions one teaspoonful of honey may be given in a glass of warm water three times a day. When there is a cough or fever then a quarter teaspoon of fresh lime or lemon juice can be mixed with one teaspoon of honey in hot water and given four times a day. Alternatively green tea (Sabzchi) with a small amount of liquorish (multhi) mixed with one teaspoon of honey will help to clear most colds and coughs.

Diarrhea and Stomach Upsets- Diarrhea's the opposite of constipation, and is more frequent in summer. A teaspoon of honey in eight ounces of Barley Water will help stop most cases of diarrhea.

Sleep Problems- Infants and children can suffer with difficulty in sleeping. One teaspoon of honey in warm milk at night or in the evening is a natural sedative that promotes sleep in children.

Teething Troubles- When children are teething, these can be difficult times. Children may become irritable, have diarrhea etc. A small amount of salt and honey mixed and massaged onto the gums helps the process of teething.

Accidents, Cuts and Burns- Serious accidents and burns need professional attention. However most parents can use honey to apply externally as an effective and safe dressing on minor burns, bruises and cuts that happen in most homes. Honey is a natural antiseptic.

HOW MUCH HONEY CAN I EAT EVERYDAY?

"How much honey is enough? Generally, three to five tablespoons of honey a day is sufficient. A good regimen to follow is to consume a tablespoon or two of honey in the morning with fruit or yogurt or cereal. Another tablespoon should be consumed at bedtime. In between, another one or two tablespoons can be ingested with fruit snacks, in baked goods, or as used in cooking. Honey contains about 60 calories per tablespoon. Generally, the percentage of ones' total caloric requirements provided from simple sugars should not exceed 10%. Thus, the 180 to 300 calories a day provided from honey is sufficient, unless excessive energy demands allow for additional consumption."

FOOD OF THE PROPHET

Numerous Quranic verses and Prophetic narrations recommend
certain foods, such as honey, dates, figs, milk and olives for their
healing properties.

For example, the Qur'an mentions the healing properties of honey:
And thy Lord taught the Bee to build its cells in hills, on trees, and in (men's) habitations; Then to eat of all the produce (of the earth), and find with skill the spacious paths of its Lord: there issues from within their bodies a drink (honey) of varying colours, wherein is healing for men: verily in this is a Sign for those who give thought.
(Qur'an 16:68-69)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said,
“Make use of the two cures: honey and the Qur’an”

[Ibnu Maajah (no 3452) & Al Haakim (4:200)]

Narrated 'Aisha:
"The Prophet used to like sweet edible things and honey. "

[Sahih Bukhari]

Narrated Ibnu Mas'uud:
"Honey healer (medicine) for all diseases"
(Al Haakim in Al Mustadrak)

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said,
"Healing is in three things: A gulp of honey, cupping, and branding with fire (cauterizing)." But I forbid my followers to use (cauterization) branding with fire."

[Sahih Bukhari]

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:
A man came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said,
"My brother has some abdominal trouble." The Prophet said to him "Let him drink honey." The man came for the second time and the Prophet said to him, 'Let him drink honey." He came for the third time and the Prophet said, "Let him drink honey." He returned again and said, "I have done that ' The Prophet then said, "Allah has said the truth, but your brother's abdomen has told a lie. Let him drink honey." So he made him drink honey and he was cured. "

[Sahih Bukhari]

Honey is not just a sugar, but also a complex combination of enzymes, organic acids, esters, antibiotic agents, trace minerals, and other, unidentified components. One pound of honey contains 1.4 grams of protein, 23 milligrams of calcium, 73 milligrams of phosphorus, 4.1 milligrams of iron, 1 milligram of niacin and 16 milligrams of vitamin C.

QUALITY OF DOANI HONEY

SIDR honey is in tremendous demand, particularly for its curative and nutritive benefits.

According to the Egyptian historian al-Maqrizi (d.1441), the author of one of the few Arabic treatises on beekeeping, 'the whole of Yemen is a land of honey'. Beekeeping is deep-rooted throughout Yemen's history with a very old and rich tradition. It is an activity which has come down through time like an inheritance.

Connoisseurs are able to distinguish between a Yemeni honey and one imported from abroad, as well as recognizing its regional origin from its aroma, colour and taste.

The degree of the humidity and consequent viscosity are of great importance in the valuation of honey. Honey has become the Yemeni's heritage and one of the most precious gifts that are presented to Sheikhs, ministers or well-known social personalities.

Quality is the most important factor in buying Sidr Doani Honey, therefore we source our Doani honey from beekeepers who we trust and know personally. As part of our commitment to deliver 100% Pure Yemeni Sidr Honey, we go a step further and send samples we receive for testing in UPM (University Putra Malaysia).

There are different way to test honey purity and quality. Scientifically it can be tested using HMF (Hydroxymethylfurfural) test, ph test etc. However as we know that honey is made up of nector, so flower of different plant from  different sorts of nector are more sweeter than the other. Some are more acidic and some are less. Similary honey which is purliy harvested from one flora have its own moisture level eg : Accasia honey's moisture level could varry from 12 % - 18% (Purity range) and on the other hand Sidr Honey (most expensive honey) from 12-15% etc. By examining the moisture level we can assume the status of honey weather it is pure or not.

The term "adulterated honey" implies that the honey has been added glucose, dextrose, molasses, corn syrup, sugar syrup, invert sugar, flour, starch, or any other similar product, other than the floral nectar gathered, processed, and stored in the comb by honey bees. Legal standards and requirements for foods, including honey quality, and tests for honey adulteration vary widely amongst countries and some may not meet the wish of every consumer around the world.

However there are various way that people test pure honey conventionally and traditionally.

1. To test, by pouring a few drops on a piece of newspaper, and trying to look at the bottom of the paper if the honey is absorbed by the paper and made it wet. IF IT CONTAINS WATER, IT WILL WET THE PAPER.

2. By tasting it, your breathing will be getting affected for a few seconds and if given to Dogs, they will cough. If it is so, it is claimed as Genuine.

3. Pour a few drops of honey into a bowl of little water, and see it getting into a solid form underneath. It will not melt immediately if it is genuine. If it goes away it means it is not genuine.

4. Put a spoon of honey on a plate with water and swirl the plate until after some time, you can see honeycomb shape formed by honey. Only pure honey will form a comb pattern.

5. Take a match stick, wipe with honey and then lit. If it can lit, its pure honey or else impure.

6. Put half tea spoon honey and then half spoon vinegar, mix them up with a needle and you will find pure honey will not mix. However impure honey mixes like water.
